BELGIAN FASHION (FILMS)

Serge Leblon is not the only Belgian presence at FASH!ON/off. On Sunday, the Ben Trovato screening will also feature these two Belgian directors: Zeb Daemen and Benny Vandendriessche, who will both be dropping by, alongside the Capara sisters.

The fashion film Indifference (picture above) was created by the two sisters, the designers behind the Capara label. For this, the designers collaborated with director Benny Vandendriessche and director of photography Carl Rottiers.

The film is based on the short story Die Sommernovelette, in which Austrian author Stefan Zweig explores the world of a man living in ghostlike indifference. However, the film has no intention to recreate Zweig’s text. By reducing its narrative elements into simple abstract images, the film is suggesting rather than telling a story. For instance, the especially designed furniture refers to the hotel in Die Sommernovelette, but it does not construct a recognizable decor.

Embedded in an original soundtrack by Senjan Jansen and cut by Els Voorspoels, the final edit expresses a strong mood, reinforcing the qualities of the Capara collection on display.

Here’s the thing: we were holding a room for Ellen von Unwerth because she secretly told us she might attend the screening of her fashion films on Saturday December 10. By now, it’s probably safe to say the legendary photographer won’t make it - still love you, Ellen! - so that means we’re stuck with an empty hotel room in one of the best hotels in Antwerp - if not the best!

Think it should be you taking Ellen von Unwerth’s place/room? Alright, then. Your dashing mission, should you decide to accept it, is to tell us which of these ten photographers is your favorite by tagging yourself in his/her picture and telling us why he/she is just the hottest shutterbug on the planet - ever! Some of you might have already heard but it’s time to make it official: Todd Cole, one of our favorite fashion photographers and filmmakers, is coming to FASH!ON/off on Sunday December 11. He is one of the artists featured in Ben Trovato Selects - meaning he will not only present his films for a.o. Rodarte, Nike and Charlotte Gainsbourg, he will also discuss his complete body of work and the other fashion films in the selection.

Todd Cole has been a photographer for quite a long time but he only recently got into the business of fashion films. In 2010, he made a short for fashion label Rodarte which was voted one of the ten best fashion films of the year by W magazine. His second film for Rodarte (starring Elle Fanning) also won him a lot of praise and ever since he’s been making some of the best fashion films, music videos and commercials around.

However, Todd Cole is also still very much a (fashion) photographer whose work has been published in i-D, Vogue, Purple, The Fader and POP - for which he did a crazy shoot with Britney Spears.

THE DAY BEFORE

In 2009, French documentary filmmaker Loïc Prigent made a four-part documentary series called The Day Before, in which he covers the dramatic 36 hours leading up to the unveiling of the fall collections by Proenza Schouler, Fendi, Sonia Rykiel & Jean-Paul Gaultier.

The series was such a success (and is now also available on dvd) that Prigent quickly made a follow-up - in six parts! The second season features six times fifty minutes of deadline craziness starring Alexander Wang & Diane von Fürstenberg (both episodes will be shown back-to-back on Friday), Donatella Versace & Narciso Rodriguez (showing on Saturday) and Nina Ricci & Jeremy Scott (showing on Sunday). It’s like The Fast and the Furious but without the ugly dudes and just one or two less stunts.

The first screening on Friday December 9 (Wang & Von Fürstenberg) will be introduced by Emma Gelaude (MyFashionBlog). After each of the three screenings, ticket holders are invited to have a (free) drink at our temporary FASH!ON/off bar in the lobby of Cinema Zuid. Having worked for such cutting-edge magazines as The Face, Dazed and Confused or even Harper’s Bazaar, Serge Leblon is one of Belgium’s most renowned and respected fashion photographers. And you don’t even have to take our word for it: just check out this recently published (and truly excellent) book - highlighting his extraordinary career.

Leblon has also worked as a fashion filmmaker for Nick Knight’s SHOWstudio - and that’s why we’ve asked him to curate a screening for us. We didn’t just ask him to show his own work, we also wanted to hear about what/who inspires him (and show that on the big screen). Expect a fascinating mix of Q&A, fashion film, avant-garde cinema (Maya Deren & Robert Wilson), music video (Talking Heads) and much more!

The International Film Festival Rotterdam is the biggest and boldest independent film festival on the planet. Every year, 350,000 people from all over the world visit the festival for its cutting-edge and innovative program - from Mexican drama and Japanese horror to video art and fashion film!

In January 2011, the International Film Festival Rotterdam screened a large number of unique and compelling fashion films from artists like Hussein Chalayan and Kenneth Anger (see above). The festival-in-festival was called Out of Fashion and FASH!ON/off is extremely happy to be able to show you this one hour best of for free (featuring Nick Knight, Joost Vandebrug, Harmony Korine and Zach Gold for A.F. Vandevorst).

Premsela, the Netherlands Institute for Design and Fashion, hand-picked FASH!ON/off as the last stop of The Perfect Cut tour - a series of talks with leading industry people about the growing relationship between fashion and film. Past speakers have included Alexander Fury (SHOWstudio) and Carri Munden (Cassette Playa). On Saturday December 10, UK style icon Stephane Raynor is heading towards Cinema Zuid (Antwerp) to talk to Dutch photographer Ari Versluis (Exactitudes) about his legendary fashion brand BOY London and about the influence fashion has on film and music (and vice versa).

For those who never heard of Stephane Raynor or BOY London: you missed out on some crazy times. Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, Raynor dressed everyone from the Sex Pistols and Boy George to Andy Warhol and Madonna - right up until his infamous brand BOY London went bankrupt; in the name and spirit of rock & roll. But the label has maintained its cult status and it is now being revived - with a little help from people like hotshot party photographer The Cobra Snake, hot chick Rihanna and just hot Natalia Kills.

Please note that this is not a cinema screening but a Q&A (in English). Entrance is free but please let us know you’re coming as soon as possible. After the Q&A, we’ll be serving (free) drinks in our temporary FASH!ON/off bar in the lobby of Cinema Zuid.

‘The Tents is not all glitz and glamor but rather a harsh view from the inside - diving below the glossy exterior of the iconic tents at Bryant Park into the madness.’ When The Tents recently premiered at New York Fashion Week, pretty much everyone was talking about it. The documentary film from director James Belzer and producer Marcus K. Jones paints a fascinating picture of the genesis and history of the New York Fashion Week - from the early ’90s to the present. A definite must see starring Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Suzy Menkes and Isaac Mizrahi.

Having worked with everyone who’s anyone, both Ellen von Unwerth and Peter Lindbergh are two of fashion’s biggest photographers - and they also happen to be two gifted filmmakers. Ellen von Unwerth, who started her career as a model and has since - as a photographer - elevated ‘naughtiness’ to Art with her impressive portfolio, has made music videos for Duran Duran and Kenneth Bager but she is best known for her infinitely sexy fashion films - starring prominent women like Eva Herzigova, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Kirsten Dunst but also well-respected actors like Vincent Cassel (in the short film Diabolo Bionda; of which you can already watch a snippet on top of this page).

Peter Lindbergh, who is credited for the dawn of the supermodel and whose work is now on display at the Antwerp Photo Museum, has been equally productive and influential in the past 25 years. The German photographer changed the face of fashion (and US Vogue) with its strikingly natural portraits of Naomi, Cindy, Linda, Tatjana and Stephanie - with whom he also made the half hour movie The Models in 1993; way before the term ‘fashion film’ was even invented. Oh, and in case you’re wondering: The Models is very much part of this screening.

With over 30,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter, Ben Trovato is no longer just the most cutting-edge blog about fashion photography (and film), it has also become one of the most influential ones - truly ‘helping aspiring fashion photographers become discovered’. That’s why we’ve asked (Norwegian founder) Marius Troy and his team of writers to put together a screening of what they consider the best and freshest fashion films. Luckily, they said ‘absofuckinglutely’.

Ben Trovato Selects is the closing screening of FASH!ON/off so expect a few surprise films and (international) guests like Todd Cole. The renowned photographer is flying in from Los Angeles to attend the screening, which will be introduced by Belgian Ben Trovato contributor Bjørn Van Poucke. Also featured in this screening are fashion films by Matias & Mathias, Suzie Q & Leo Siboni, Cristian Straub, Zakary Chenoweth, Frédéric Sofiyana, Billy Rood, Justin Anderson, Benny Vandendriessche, Zeb Daemen, Calum Macdiarmid and Yohan Ungar.
